Dutch giants Ajax will hope to rise from the bottom of the Eredivisie standings when they host Volendam. The two sides are two points apart, Ajax on five points and 16th placed Volendam on seven. Ordinarily, Ajax would be expected to easily win this game, but this hasn’t been that season for them. After eight rounds, they are already 25 points behind leaders PSV. They come into the game with just one win in eight matches and one of the poorest runs in defence. In eight matches, Ajax have conceded 21 times; only Heracles have conceded more. Ajax have however scored 13 times in their eight league matches. With five losses in eight matches, you’d expect their confidence to be eroded. That was well visible in their 5-2 loss to PSV in their last game. The defeat marked a run of 10 games without a win and they will hope for a change here. There has been news of the imminent arrival of Albert Stuivenberg as head coach but there’s no confirmation yet.

Volendam, like Ajax, aren’t having a great season. They’ve played a game more than Ajax and have two wins this season in Eredivisie. The visitors are coming from a 3-1 comeback win over Excelsior. Robert Muhren was among the scorers on that win – his fourth goal of the season. This was Volendam’s second win in three matches and they will hope to extend the run against Ajax. None of their wins has however come away from home and they have just one clean sheet in the nine games. In their nine matches so far, they have failed to score in just one. In the last five meetings with Ajax, Volendam haven't won any. They have scored in each of the five meetings but have no clean sheets.
