Ajax will look to get their Eredivisie campaign off to a winning start when they welcome Heracles to the Johan Cruijff Arena for matchday 1 on Saturday. The hosts were made to give up the league title to Feyenoord last season as they only managed a third-placed finish, while the visitors will be returning to the top flight this season. After beating PSV by two points in the 2021-22 season, Ajax finished six points behind them last term with a tally of 69 in 34 games. They recorded 20 wins, seven draws, and seven losses and had the second-best attacking and defensive records with 86 and 38, respectively. In 17 matches at home, the hosts secured 10 wins and a total of 34 points from a possible 51. Ajax won the last encounter against Heracles 3-0 and are unbeaten against them in their last four encounters. In addition, they kept clean sheets in each of those four matches. Unsurprisingly, they are the clear favourites to win this match. 

After suffering relegation in the 2021-22 season, Heracles bounced straight back up at the first time of asking. The visitors won the Eerste Divisie last season but were involved in an intense battle with PEC Zwolle, with both sides ending the campaign with identical records of 27 wins, four draws, and seven losses. Heracles ultimately won the league with a better goal difference. The visitors played three matches in the preseason, starting with a 1-0 win over Emmen. They then played a doubleheader against Volendam and Helmond Sport, losing the first match while winning the latter 2-0. While matches against this type of opposition will not determine whether they survive this season, the Heracles boss will be hoping for a positive performance to build on.
