Ajax’s defensive issues showed up again in their opening game of the Eredivisie and this is none of the key areas they have to address when they host Groningen in their second game. In their opening game, against Fortuna Sittard, Ajax had to come from a goal down, to win 3-2. That was their sixth straight game across all competitions without a clean sheet. It was the third time in five matches that they conceded two or more goals and this will definitely be a concern. Ajax have however made up for it with a sharp attack and they go into this game having scored three or more goals in four of their last five matches. Both sides have scored in their last six matches and four of the last five have produced over 2.5 goals.

Groningen also had a poor show defensively in their opening league game. They led 2-0 but allowed Volendam back in the game, to see it end 2-2. Theirs is the same story as Ajax’s; they rarely keep clean sheets. In the last 17 matches, they have no clean sheet, but they have scored in each of their last five matches. In four of their last five games, Groningen have scored two or more goals and each of their last 11 matches has produced over 2.5 goals. The visitors do not have a great away record though; in the last six away matches, they have suffered five losses, and in these losses, they have conceded three or more goals.
