16th placed Emmen have the chance to rise from the relegation positions on Match Day 29 of the Dutch Eredivisie but they will have to negotiate a tough away match against Ajax. Second placed Ajax are eight points off the title race and take on Emmen who occupy the relegation playoff spot, two points away from safety. Ajax’s dominance in the league has been checked this season and they will need a momentous favor from other teams to be able to defend their title. They still have tough matches ahead and a win here should be a guarantee for the hosts. Their only loss in the last four matches was against the league leaders, which complicated their situation but they are coming from two straight wins here. One of those wins was against Feyenoord in the KNVB Beker and their most recent outing ended in a 4-0 win over Fortuna Sittard, which was also their second clean sheet in three games. At home, Ajax have four wins and three clean sheets, while they have scored two or more in four of the five matches.

Emmen have had six previous meetings with Ajax, and they’ve never won any. In their first meeting this season, they came from 3-1 down to force a 3-3 draw at home to the champions and will look back at that for inspiration coming into this game.  They’ve had two unbeaten outings coming into this game, the most recent a 0-0 draw with NEC, having earlier beaten bottom placed Cambuur. Emmen have failed to score twice in their last three matches and away from home in the league, they’ve conceded two or more in three of five league matches. Being eight points ahead of the automatic relegation positions, Emmen will not have that as an immediate concern. They however need to get points to rise from the play-off position and a win here could see them rise three places.
