AC Milan had a big boost in their chase for the Serie A title in the opening matches of the year as they closed the gap with league leaders Napoli to just five points. They will be hoping to close it down further when they play host to AS Roma in their next game. Milan head into this game with 36 points, in second place, while Roma are sixth, on 30 points. Milan are coming from a 2-1 win over Salernitana and that coupled with Napoli’s loss in the last round made for a good start to the year. Now with a five-match unbeaten run, and only a loss in the last nine matches, Milan should be very confident taking on Roma at home. They are also unbeaten in the last four home league matches, winning all of them. Milan have only lost once in 16 home league games. Milan will have to do without a number of key players for this game. Injuries will rule out Zlatan Ibrahimovic, goalkeeper Mike Maignan, Ante Rebic, Simon Kjaer, and Divock Origi. However, Rafael Leao and Olivier Giroud remain fit and are expected to start here.

AS Roma also started the new year on a winning note, beating Bologna 1-0 courtesy of Lorenzo Pellegrini’s penalty goal in the sixth minute. That was their first win in four matches; they have two in five and have lost once in that run. The result also marked their first clean sheet in eight matches but they are still struggling to stabilize in attack, scoring more than a goal in just one of their last five games.
