Coppa Italia round of 16 action will see AC Milan host Cagliari with a quarter-final berth against Atalanta or Sassuolo on the line. This match will be played at the San Siro Stadium on Tuesday. Milan are the five-time Coppa Italia winners but haven’t won this title since the 2002-03 campaign. Cagliari have never won this title and their best is a final appearance in 1968-69. Milan crashed out at this very stage last year when they were beaten 1-0 by Torino via extra time. That seemed to be an aberration though, as the Milanese giants have progressed to at least the quarter-finals in each of the prior 13 seasons before that defeat. They are also in relatively better form coming into this match, with three wins and a draw across their last four competitive matches. Playing at this venue gives much more strength as Milan have won five of their last six competitive games at this venue – including three in a row.

Cagliari started this year’s campaign in the round of 64 defeating Serie B side Palermo 2-1 in additional extra time. They also needed additional extra time to win 2-1 against fellow Serie A side Udinese in the next round to progress to this round of 16. With the Sardinians in the relegation zone of Serie A after 18 matches, their run in the Cup competition could provide relief. That said, their only visit to San Siro to play AC Milan in Coppa Italia back in 1992-93 ended in a defeat. Even in the league, they have lost nine of their last ten visits to this venue, drawing the other, against AC Milan. A run of two defeats and a draw across their last three competitive matches doesn’t inspire much confidence either that the visitors can upset the odds.
