Aberdeen had a good campaign in Scotland last season finishing runners-up behind Celtic. They have a good European pedigree having won the Cup Winners Cup back in the days of Alex Ferguson. They beat Fola Esch from Luxembourg in the first qualifying round. The first leg was at home and it took them till the 68th minute to take the lead only for the visitors to level two minutes later. It looked as if they might have to settle for a disappointing home draw before goals in the 93rd and 98th minutes gave them a good 3-1 lead to take to Luxembourg. They lost the away leg 1-0 so not the greatest of starts to their campaign. They now take on Ventspils from Latvia who beat Vikingur from the Faroe Islands 4-0 in the first qualifying round winning both legs 2-0 with Karlsons scoring three of their four goals. The Latvian side haven't reached the third qualifying round of the Europa League since the 2013-14 season. Aberdeen can edge a first leg lead here.
