RB Leipzig need to get a win from this trip to Mainz. They are down to fourth in the Bundesliga, while their opponents are just a place above the relegation play-off position. Leipzig are now seven points behind the league leaders and that gap can't get much wider. It's not that they are losing games, they're just drawing too many and losing ground. Last weekend saw them host Freiburg and they needed a 77th minute equalizer to grab a 1-1 draw. That made it three straight league draws, though they have all come against sides currently in the top seven. Leipzig are unbeaten in their last seven league games with just a loss away at Eintracht Frankfurt in the last 17. On their travels, Leipzig have seven wins and only Hoffenheim have conceded less away goals.

Mainz won't be blamed for wanting a bit of revenge this weekend. The reverse fixture saw them lose 8-0 at Leipzig and it could have been a lot worse. They trailed 7-9 with 40 minutes to go but only conceded one more as Timo Werner completed his hat-trick. Mainz are only a couple of points above the relegation play-off position but nine clear of the automatic relegation places, though Werder Bremen do have a game in hand on them. Last weekend saw them get a 2-2 draw at FC Koln, not a bad result considering they were two goals down with 29 minutes remaining. They are unbeaten in their last three games but the win they had was over bottom-of-the-table Padeborn. Home form has seen four games won but seven lost. Only 13 goals have been scored, the second worst record in the league. Leipzig can keep their title hopes alive with an away win.
