The 49ers are favored by 1.5-points in the first half.

San Francisco is the slightest of favorites to win the first quarter at -115 odds.

Christian McCaffrey is the player oddsmakers foresee finding the end zone first on Sunday.

As kick-off approaches, Patrick Mahomes is the betting favorite to win Super Bowl MVP. That’s a bit shocking, considering his team is an underdog to win the game. The 49ers have more paths to victory it appears, while a Chiefs victory will almost certainly come via the arm of Mahomes.

There’s plenty of ways to bet on the Super Bowl. Here are some of the most popular ways to get involved in the action. 

Moneyline

Simply pick the winner of the game. The odds are adjusted based on the implied probability of each team winning, with San Francisco being a slight favorite. The margin of victory does not matter when betting the moneyline.

Over/Under

Will the game feature more or less than 47.5 points combined between the two teams? If you expect the offenses to have success, an over bet would be the way to go. However, both defenses have been good this season which might make the under an attractive bet. 

Spread

Will the 49ers win by at least 3 points? Will Kansas City either win the game outright or keep the margin of loss under three points? When betting the spread, you need the favorite to win by more than the number or the underdog to keep it within the number listed. 

Super Bowl Futures

From the time the previous season’s Super Bowl ends right until the end of the conference championship games, bettors have had the opportunity to place futures bets on which teams they thought would win the Super Bowl. Take for example, you like the Chiefs to win and Travis Kelce to score but you expect Christian McCaffrey and George Kittle to have big nights for San Francisco. 

A parlay including a Kansas City win, a Kelce touchdown, McCaffrey to go over 100 rushing yards and Kittle to score for San Francisco. That parlay pays out at 32-to-1 odds, meaning a $20 bet would pay out $640. That’s certainly more appetizing for the casual bettors.

In some ways, the Super Bowl is a national holiday. Everyone watches the games. It’s a social event with parties thrown to celebrate the occasion. In most cases, everyone has some kind of financial investment in the game whether it’s through a typical bet, an office pool, a box pool, fantasy football or a friendly in-the-moment wager. While it all may seem fun, here are some tips to keep in mind for betting the Super Bowl. 

It’s a normal football game

Sure, there’s more hype and excitement surrounding the Super Bowl than there is a normal NFL game. However, at its core, we’re still handicapping a football game. We have 20 games of tape on Kansas City and 19 games of tape on San Francisco. When betting the sides and totals and props, make sure not to get carried away in the excitement. Just because it’s the Super Bowl doesn’t mean we’ll see the teams combine for 2,000 yards and 20 touchdowns. There won’t be six safeties and four overtimes. Apply the standards you use for a normal game to the Big Game on Sunday. 

Have fun, but stay smart

There is certainly a social aspect to betting the Super Bowl. You are likely watching the game with people and there’s some type of party going on. You’re probably making side bets with people. One of your friends suggests a bet and you think “that’s a good one” and add it to your own betting account. Soon enough you have three times as many bets as you originally had after collaborating with the social scene. Then, you get added to the party’s Super Bowl box and all of a sudden there’s a lot of money being risked. Sure, it’s a once-a-year experience, but make sure you’re not betting over your head. 

Don’t chase your bets

As a follow-up to the previous point, don’t get angry and start chasing your bets if things aren’t going well. This is the last meaningful football game until the Fall, so you might feel some anxiety or pressure to win some money. If you’re drinking alcohol at the Super Bowl party, that only impacts your ability to make sound decisions as well. Don’t make things worse by doubling down or chasing your bets.

Now that it’s time to place our bets on the Super Bowl, let’s take a look at some recents trends. 

The spread rarely matters

This will be the 31st Super Bowl with a point spread of lower than six points. In those first 30 games, the winner of the Super Bowl has covered the spread 29 times. In games where the point spread has been four points or fewer (like this upcoming Super Bowl), the Super Bowl winning team has covered all 22 times. The only exception was two years ago when the Los Angeles Rams won the Super Bowl over the Cincinnati Bengals, but failed to cover as 4.5-point favorites. 

If you like the underdog to win the Super Bowl. simply bet them on the moneyline. Those points have historically meant very little in the Big Game. Contrarily, if you like the favorite to win, have a few reservations about laying the number. History shows that number isn’t usually big enough. 

Patrick Mahomes as an underdog

Patrick Mahomes has been a betting underdog 12 times in his career. He’s won nine of those games straight up and failed to cover the spread just once. 

Mahomes and the Chiefs have been betting underdogs in their last two playoff victories over Buffalo and Baltimore. They were also underdogs in last year’s Super Bowl against Philadelphia. Obviously, the Chiefs won all three games outright. 

Mahomes is 4-0 all-time at Allegiant Stadium. He’s 3-0 against San Francisco, including a Super Bowl victory four years ago. 

Underdogs have been hot

In the last 16 Super Bowls, the underdog has won outright nine times, giving them a winning record in a spot where they are expected to lose. Underdogs are 11-5 against the number in those 16 games.

The most recent underdog to experience success was the Kansas City Chiefs last season. They were 2-point underdogs in most spots against the Philadelphia Eagles. Mahomes and the Chiefs won the game by a final score of 38-35. 

White jerseys dominate Super Bowl history

The San Francisco 49ers will wear their white jerseys on Sunday, as the Kansas City Chiefs as the designated home team elected to wear their red jerseys. 

In Super Bowl history, wearing your white jersey usually leads to success. Teams wearing white are 37-20 all-time in the Super Bowl, including last year when the Chiefs wore white in their win over the green-wearing Philadelphia Eagles. 

In recent years, however, the jersey color hasn’t proven to mean much to the Chiefs. They wore red in their Super Bowl victory over the 49ers in 2020. In 2021, they wore red in their Super Bowl loss to Tampa Bay. Last season, they wore white in their victory over Philadelphia.

History might not be on the side of the red jersey, but the Chiefs have beaten the 49ers in this uniform in recent memory. Maybe that’s what they were banking on when they made this choice.
