After splitting the first two games, the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Washington Nationals are headed into a rubber match at PNC Park on Wednesday.
The Pirates are 1-4 in their last five games, including a 0-3 shutout loss to the Nationals on Tuesday. It marked Pittsburgh’s second shutout loss and third in the season. The Pirates’ offense is suffering through the first three weeks, batting .195 (30th in the MLB) with 60 runs (25th) and only 10 home runs.
The Nationals arrested their three-game losing streak with their first shutout win of the season. Jake Irvin pitched seven scoreless innings, surrendering three hits and striking out six strikeouts. Washington, who averages 4.6 runs per game in his last five games, got a homer from James Wood and two-run single from Nasim Nunez in a low-scoring game.
