The Washington Capitals (36-29-10 SU, 37-38 ATS) try to recover from a listless loss on Thursday when they visit their division rivals, the Carolina Hurricanes (47-22-7 SU, 33-43 ATS). The Capitals now find their playoff hopes in serious danger, as they no longer control their own fate. They do play three teams who are on the outside looking in, but they also face top teams in Boston and Philadelphia to close the season. To make matters worse, they come to Raleigh as losers of four straight games.
The Hurricanes also look to make amends after a poor showing on Thursday night against Boston. Carolina knows it’s going to be in the playoffs, and it’s in kind of an odd spot. Finishing first in the division would open the door to face Tampa Bay or even Toronto, a much tougher matchup than either Philadelphia or the Islanders. The Hurricanes want to come in with momentum, but if they’re being honest, they probably don’t really want to catch the Rangers.

Don’t expect a well-played game in this one. Both teams are coming off a back-to-back, which means a lower quality of hockey as dead legs get in the way. But the Hurricanes are both the stronger team and the team with more momentum. Washington always looked like its rise was smoke and mirrors anyway, and the Capitals are clearly running out of steam as the season nears the finish line.
It would have been nice for Alex Ovechkin to get one more fairy tale run with this team at age 38. But the reality is that time has just about run out for the Capitals’ greatest player. Washington has failed to score more than twice in four straight games, which isn’t ideal against Carolina. Our prediction for Washington vs. Carolina is Hurricanes -1.5.
