United States meets Uruguay in the final match of Group C with everything on the line. The Americans were supposed to roll through the first two matches, qualify with ease and set themselves up for the real tests of Copa America. Instead, they’re now fighting for their lives in this tournament. And they’re doing it against an Uruguay side that historically punches above its weight and has looked very good to date.
The Americans don’t even control their own destiny at this tournament any longer, as they need to win and get a bit of help from Bolivia. If the U.S. beats Uruguay, they only advance if they win the match by at least four goals or if Panama can’t make up a two-goal difference on the United States. If Panama wins by two more than the U.S. does, Panama wins on goals scored and would go through.

The key thing to remember here is what each side has to do to progress. Uruguay doesn’t have to attack the Americans’ net; a draw is good enough to see the Celeste through as group winners. It’s only if Uruguay loses the match that things get even slightly uncomfortable, and even then, the Americans would have to win by at least four goals to top the group.
Most likely, the United States would be looking at going through in second. They have to assume that Panama is going to beat Bolivia, as Bolivia is the weakest side in the tournament. If that’s correct, that would mean only victory against Ukraine is enough for them to advance. Given how weak this group looked on paper going in, anything less than qualifying for the next round almost certainly means the end of the line for U.S. coach Gregg Berhalter.

The United States has shown none of the discipline that is expected to win at this level. They allowed themselves to get drawn into a foul-heavy matchup with Panama and gave away a bad foul way too early in the match. Having to play a man down for 70 minutes was never likely to work, and the United States got what they deserved.
Facing Uruguay in a must-win situation isn’t where anyone wanted to be in the American camp. The Celeste are in top form, and even though it was only Panama and Bolivia, Uruguay dismissed them both with ease. This is exactly what a top side does, as Uruguay was never threatened by either opponent. It won’t have any fear or intimidation of the United States in this situation, even against a hostile crowd.
