The USA are clearly in with a shout of reaching the quarter-finals of the men's soccer tournament at the 2024 Olympics. They didn't get off to the best of starts in Group A against hosts France. After a very complicated last half-hour, the American team suffered a heavy defeat (3-0). Marko Mitrovic's team needed to bounce back the following day against New Zealand. And they did! Walker Zimmerman's team-mates showed no signs of wavering in their victory over New Zealand (1-4). They were already leading by 3 goals after just 30 minutes.
The USA are now in 2nd place in Group A. They have the same number of points as New Zealand (3rd), but a better goal difference. The New Zealanders will have their work cut out against France at the same time. For their part, the United States take on Guinea this Tuesday. The match will take place at Geoffroy-Guichard in Saint-Étienne. An opponent well within the Americans' reach. Guinea are all but eliminated from this tournament.
