Monte Carlo Masters semifinalist Alex De Minaur of Australia faces Tomas Martin Etcheverry of Argentina in the first round of the 2025 Barcelona Open.
De Minaur’s clay-court season is off to a strong start after reaching the semis of the Monte Carlo Masters. After falling short in the round-of-16 at the two Sunshine Double tournaments, the Australian finally broke through to the quarterfinals by carving out impressive wins – including an emphatic double bagel victory over Grigor Dimitrov in the quarterfinals. He looked set for another dominant win against Lorenzo Musetti in the semis. Still, the Italian turned the tables around with a furious second-set rally that carried over to the deciding set.
Etcheverry has been on an inconsistent stretch where he has lost six of his last eight matches, underscored by first-round losses at the Miami Open and US Men’s Clay-Court Championships. The Argentine ended a three-match losing streak with a three-set win over Corentin Moutet 4-6 6-1 6-4 in the first round before bowing to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina the next round 7-6(2) 6-3.
