Tennessee looked very good in its opener against Chattanooga, but the Volunteers face a much more difficult situation in N.C. State, which features a highly opportunistic defense that’s built around forcing turnovers.
For the Wolfpack, a win here is paramount if this team has any hope of making the playoff without winning the ACC. The league took a beating in the first week, as most of its top contenders lost their marquee games. N.C. State’s now carrying the flag for the league against the SEC, which isn’t exactly a great place for the Wolfpack to be. If they lose here, they’re not going to have enough good wins to reach the playoff without winning the league.

Tennessee has looked very good in Nico Iamaleava’s two collegiate starts, but this represents his first real test against an opponent who can actually hit back. The Volunteers have allowed just three points in their past two games, but that came against an FCS opponent and Iowa’s poor offense.
N.C. State really didn’t look very good against Western Carolina. The Wolfpack found themselves stopped twice by the Catamounts’ defense on a 4th-and-1, and they actually found themselves trailing the FCS opponent in the second half. If State is going to make a game out of this, it has to get KC Concepcion involved in the offense early and often. Tennessee excels at getting ahead and forcing teams out of their game, and the Vols will try to do that again here. Our prediction for Tennessee vs. N.C. State is Tennessee -8.5.
