Meanwhile, Fritz advanced to the quarterfinal round of the US Open after upsetting three-time Grand Slam finalist Casper Ruud 3-6 6-4 6-3 6-2. Fritz dropped the first set against Ruud, making it the first time the American lost a set in four matches. Finally faced with adversity, Fritz persevered and swept the next three sets to pull off his fifth win over a top-10 player this 2024. Fritz made the upset win possible by winning 84 percent of his first serves into points and breaking Ruud four times in the match.
