They’re sending Ranger Suarez back to the mound, and he’s mostly been reliable as long as the opponent isn’t Atlanta.
In his past two starts against the Braves, Suarez has been bombed for nine earned runs in nine innings. In his other four starts since June, Suarez has allowed eight earned runs in 21.1 innings. He’s not going to eat innings, but he will offer five to six good innings most nights and gives the Phillies a chance to win the game. As long as the bats don’t go cold, they can usually handle that: his past five defeats have all seen Philadelphia score two runs or less.

Tampa Bay has been dynamite in the second game of its series, but Taj Bradley has not. In his past seven starts, Bradley hasn’t had one start where he’s allowed fewer than three runs. His only quality start in the past month-plus came on Aug. 19 at Oakland, and of course, the Rays never scored, wasting it. Otherwise, he’s given up home run after home run, allowing 10 long balls in his past six starts.
The Phillies can hit most nights, and Citizens Bank Park is still built for home-run hitters. The park’s reputation isn’t as feared for pitchers as it was 20 years ago, but the Phils still rank ninth in the majors in home runs for a reason. If Bradley can’t keep the ball down, he’s likely to give up at least one and possibly more long balls to this lineup.
