The 2025 BMW Open kicked things off with a fascinating battle between American rising star Learner Tien and Netherlands’ No.1 Tallon Griekspoor on Monday.
Tien has started the clay-court season brimming with optimism after scoring two excellent wins over much more experienced players on this surface. Tien outdueled Henri Squire 7-5 2-6 6-0 and then pulled off an upset over veteran Botic Van De Zandschulp 6-2 6-2. The victories powered Tien to his first main draw appearance at the BMW Open – an ATP 500 event in Munich Germany.
Griekspoor secured his place in the main draw because of his ranking. The world’s No.21 had finished runner-up to Luciano Darderi 7-6(3) 7-6(4) in the final of Grand Prix Hassan II in Marrakech but crashed out in the first round at the hands of French rising star Arthur Fils 6-7(3) 6-4 6-2 at Monte Carlo.

Let's see if lightning really strikes twice in the case of Tien, who will try to win his second straight clay-court match against a Dutch. Tien showed a glimpse of his potential on clay when he demolished Botic Van De Zandschulp 6-2, 6-2 in the final qualifying match. However, I would advise everybody to hit the break on a possible breakout for Tien at this year’s BMW Open because his campaign will likely end as early as the first round against a much more experienced competitor in Tallon Griekspoor. Griekspoor is coming off a final stint in Morocco and competed well against eventual Monte Carlo Masters quarterfinalist Arthur Fils, 6-7(3) 6-4 6-2 in the first round of that tourney. Tien is still a diamond in the rough on this particular surface, and I am excited about his potential as a player. But for now, I have Griekspoor cruising to an easy 2-0 win.
