Switzerland vs Italy Prediction & Picks - Euro
by Simon Day | in Euro Picks
The second round of Euro 2024 begins with a fascinating contest between Italy and Switzerland in Berlin. Both sides finished second in their respective groups, although Italy needed a 97th minute equalizer against Croatia to secure their place in the last 16, after following up their 2-1 win over Albania with a 1-0 loss against Spain. Switzerland had a more serene path to the knockouts, picking up five points and remaining undefeated in their three group games. The bookmakers have Italy as favorites for the game, but with Switzerland in such good form, could an upset be on the cards?Limited Offer. Currently at BetRivers

Switzerland - Italy: Form Analysis
Switzerland are undefeated in 2024, winning three and drawing four of their seven games. They have only lost once in 17 games since their humiliating 6-1 defeat to Portugal in the second round of the 2022 World Cup. At the last European Championships, Switzerland produced a memorable run to the quarter finals before bowing out on penalties to Spain.
Italy also came into the tournament in impressive form, losing just one of their 12 games before the 1-0 loss against Spain on Gameday Two. However, the Italians have struggled in front of goal in recent times, finding the net just four times in their last five games. Italy are the defending European champions, beating England on penalties in the final of Euro 2020 to secure their first major trophy since the 2006 World Cup.
The two teams met in the group stages of Euro 2020, with Italy securing a 3-0 victory thanks to goals from Manuel Locatelli (2) and Ciro Immobile. The Italians are now unbeaten in their last 11 games against Switzerland, a run that goes all the way back to 1993. They also lead the overall head to head by 29 wins to seven.

Switzerland & Italy Squad Analysis
Switzerland will be without full back Silvan Widmer, after the Mainz defender picked up his second booking of the tournament in the 1-1 draw with Germany. Swiss boss Murat Yakin has a number of options to take Widmer's place, with Dan Ndoye, Fabian Rieder, Steven Zuber and Michel Aebischer all in contention. Up front, Breel Embolo will continue after his successful return from injury.
Possible starting eleven: Sommer; Schar, Akanji, Rodriguez; Zuber, Rieder, Xhaka, Freuler, Aebischer; Ndoye, Embolo
Italy will also be missing a defender due to suspension, with Ricardo Calafiori the man to miss out. Gianluca Mancini seems the man likely to take his place in the Italian back three. Mattia Zaccagni is pushing for a starting place after his superb last second goal gave Italy a precious point against Croatia. Up front, manager Luciano Spalletti must choose between Mateo Retegui and Gianluca Scamacca, neither of whom found the net in the group stage.
Possible starting eleven: Donnarumma; Di Lorenzo, Bastoni, Mancini, Darmian; Barella, Jorginho; Raspadori, Pellegrini, Dimarco; Retegui

Our Switzerland vs Italy Prediction
We can sniff an upset in this one. Switzerland have played extremely well in their first three games and look well equipped to replicate their Euro 2020 run to the quarter finals. Their 1-1 draw with Germany was especially impressive, and they were just a couple of minutes away from completing a famous win. On the other hand, Italy have failed to convince in any of their group games. Their victory over Albania was slightly fortunate, before they were comprehensively outplayed by Spain and barely deserved their 1-1 draw versus Croatia.
Our prediction for Switzerland vs Italy is: Switzerland to win, +140 at BetRivers.
