Learner Tien of the United States will try to become the first American to advance into the men’s singles quarterfinals on Monday as he slugs it out with Lorenzo Sonego of Italy at the 2025 Australian Open. Tien captured his sixth straight victory on Saturday, topping Corentin Moutet of France 7-6(10) 6-3 6-3. The 19-year-old Tien became the youngest player since Rafael Nadal to play in the round of 16. He accomplished the feat by displaying incredible composure to win the grueling tiebreaker in the first set and high-level of tennis skills to put away his French foe for good in three sets. Meanwhile, Sonego’s potent service game was fully displayed in his third-round win over Fabian Marozsan of Hungary 6-7(3) 7-6(6) 6-1 6-2. After conceding the first set in a tiebreaker, Sonego got his turn to win a close tiebreaker in the second set to level the scorer at 1 set apiece. Sonego then unleashed a more furious attack in the next two sets, dropping only three games from that point onwards. With the victory, Sonego moved to the fourth round of the Australian Open for the first time and of any Grand Slam tournament for the fourth time.
