Slovakia has avoided defeat in 15 of its past 18 matches. The Falcons have mostly played to the level of their competition, as their only defeats came against Portugal twice and Austria. The Slovaks won seven of their 10 matches in qualifying and scored in eight of them, only failing to score in a 1-0 loss to Portugal.
During qualifying for Euro 2024, Ukraine has won three of its six matches in 2024 and conceded in four of its six matches. Thanks to the use of Nations League to seed the Euro qualification pots, the Blue and Yellow found themselves in a group that included both England and Italy, forcing it to come through the playoff path to qualify.
Ukraine seemed to calm some of the questions surrounding the attack in a 4-0 friendly win over Moldova, but the Moldovans' rank of 153 isn't anywhere close to any of the teams at this tournament. But Ukraine looked so poor in its first match that it's hard to see changes making a big difference.
Slovakia holds the cards here because it can afford to play defensively and wait for its moment. Ukraine must go all-out for a win, because a draw would leave it with the unenviable task of having to beat Belgium to have any hope of progressing. That could open things up for Slovakia to get the one goal it needs to win this match and move on to the knockout stages. Historically, Slovakia has chosen to let the match come to it when faced with these situations, such as in Euro 2016 when it played out a scoreless stalemate with England in its final group match. There's a good chance Slovakia follows up its historic win with another solid performance, but the Falcons' conservative tendencies make this a match where it's worth protecting yourself from the draw possibility.
