Slovakia vs Romania Prediction & Picks - Euro
by Dan Angell | in Euro Picks
Slovakia meets Romania in a matchup that could see both teams through to the round of 16. This has the potential to be one of the most boring matches of all-time, as there is little incentive for either side to press the issue. Thanks to Italy’s last-gasp equalizer against Croatia, both sides know that they could stand around and do nothing for 90 minutes and they would both qualify for the round of 16.
And that’s why the draw is going off at the lowest odds of the three outcomes. Usually, a draw is the least likely outcome, but in this case, a draw truly does benefit both sides. The only way either side pushes is if they don’t like their potential matchup in the round of 16. As it stands, Romania would either top the group and likely face Austria or come second and meet France or the Netherlands. Slovakia, meanwhile, would be on track to finish third and play Spain.

Slovakia - Romania: Form Analysis
Slovakia has a history of holding back and letting the match come to them in the final match of the group stage. In 2016, the Slovaks knew they could progress with a point and successfully parked the bus for a scoreless draw with England. Things didn’t go nearly as well when they tried to repeat that strategy against Spain in 2021. The Spaniards needed a win to progress and proceeded to ruin Slovakia’s goal differential in a 5-0 rout that sent the Slovaks home.
Romania have little history of being in this spot. The Tricolori have only ever made it out of the group stage once in Euros, and that came back in 2000 when they needed to beat England to progress. Otherwise, Romania hasn’t even been in a spot where qualifying is even an option. The Romanians’ win over Ukraine was just their second win ever in the Euros, as they’ve usually just made up the numbers when they’ve participated.

Slovakia & Romania Squad Analysis
There’s another reason for Romania to sit back and take a guaranteed spot in the next round: the midfield could easily get destroyed from yellow card accumulation. Marius Marin and Razvan Marin are both on yellow cards, as is left defender Nicusor Bancu. If the midfield is lost to a card, it’s going to be very difficult for Romania to overcome that absence.
Only Ivan Schranz has taken a card for Slovakia. That’s still a worry, though, as he’s the only one to score a goal for the Falcons.

Our Slovakia vs Romania Prediction
Neither side looks likely to open this up, so this really comes down to how conservative you want to play it. A conservative strategy would bet on at least one team to fail to score to protect against the possibility of a stoppage-time winner, while an aggressive strategy would back the draw and throw caution to the wind.
The aggressive strategy actually might make more sense, because if either side scores, the equation of the match completely changes. A draw sees both teams through, but if this match has a winner, the losing side is eliminated. However, if one side takes the lead, they don’t have to go into a shell because they’d still be through even if they lose the lead and settle for a draw. With that being the case, the draw both offers better odds and the better long-term play, so our prediction for Slovakia vs. Romania is for the match to end in a draw.
Slovakia vs Romania - Other Interesting Picks
No Goal Scorer
It’s a weird way to bet, but there’s such a strong possibility of both teams deciding to just take what they have and call it a day that going with no goalscorer makes a lot of sense. Romania and Slovakia are both coming off losses where they conceded twice, and neither will feel supremely confident. Given that both would have taken qualification at the start of the tournament, a scoreless draw feels very probable.
