Giron made it to the third round but not before outlasting Tomas Martin Etcheverry in a five-set showdown 7-5 3-6 7-5 3-6 6-4. Ranked No.45 in the world, Giron engaged in a see-saw battle with Etcheverry, who squandered a 4-2 game advantage in the fifth and deciding set. Giron won 64 points off his first serves and seized 8 breakpoints, 2 of which came in the fifth set that sealed the win.
