Fresh off an 8-4 win in Game 1, the Cincinnati Reds will try to take their winning streak to six games on Wednesday when they lock horns with the Seattle Mariners in Game 2 of their series at Great American Ball Park.
The Reds have won their last four games thanks in large part to their impeccable pitching. Cincinnati boasts the third best ERA (2.93) in baseball with Hunter Greene, Brady Singer and Nick Lodolo putting in All-Star worthy numbers. But what is scary is the Reds is also experiencing an uptick in their batting numbers in the past several days. In the last 5 games, the Reds are averaging 6.0 runs per game despite still batting sub-200 at .180.
As for the Mariners, Tuesday’s result ended the Mariners’ four-game winning streak. Seattle, who is pitching 3.83 in the season, gave up 8 runs for the first time since the 10-9 11th inning loss to the San Francisco Giants on March 31. The Mariners are third in the AL West behind the Los Angeles Angels (9-7) and the Texas Rangers (10-7).

It's somewhat refreshing to see the Reds scoring more than 6 runs and at the same time, still tormenting opposing teams with their pitching. Under manager Terry Francona, the Reds have immediately carved out an identity, becoming an efficient pitching team that dominates teams with their depth and tactics. The Reds’ bullpen will be put to the test on Wednesday, though, because I believe projected starter Nick Martinez will not pitch more than four runs, especially if he continues to disappoint on the mound. Probably the weakest link in the staff, Martinez gave away four earned runs in a 6-8 loss to San Francisco on April 9. Cincinnati’s bullpen, however, is allowing a 2.96 ERA and a .196 BAA this season. Game 2 promises to be a lot different than Game 1 because this match will focus more on quality pitching and excellent defense, which would bode well for Cincinnati.
