Scotland vs Switzerland Prediction & Picks - Euro
by Simon Day | in Euro Picks
Scotland face a monumental task on Wednesday, as they attempt to bounce back from their humiliating 5-1 defeat to Germany on Gameday One. Standing in front of them will be a Swiss side fresh off an impressive 3-1 victory over Hungary in their opening game. To make things even tougher for Scotland boss Steve Clarke, he will be without defender Ryan Porteous, following the Watford man's red card against Germany.
Victory for Switzerland will virtually guarantee them a place in the last 16, whilst Scotland will need to avoid defeat to have any realistic chance of progressing.

Scotland - Switzerland: Form Analysis
Although Friday's thrashing came as a major shock to Scotland, it was indicative of a poor run of form that has seen them win just one of their last eight games. Remarkably, Scotland's last ever victory in a major tournament came against Switzerland in Euro 96. On that occasion, a goal from Ally McCoist gave the Scots a 1-0 success at Villa Park. Since then they have failed to win any of their seven major tournament games, scoring just four goals in the process.
The Swiss have a far better tournament record than Scotland since that 1996 defeat. They have qualified for nine of the last 10 major tournaments, and at Euro 2020 they reached the quarter finals for the first ever time, thanks to a penalty shootout victory over France. They then came agonizingly close to making the final four, but fell to defeat against Spain in another tense shootout following a 1-1 draw.
Overall, Scotland hold an 8-5 advantage in the head to head between the teams. However, they have only met once since that Euro 96 game, an international friendly in 2006, which the Swiss won by three goals to one.

Scotland & Switzerland Squad Analysis
Scotland seem likely to make changes following the Germany defeat. Ryan Porteous is suspended so Grant Hanley (who performed admirably in the second half against Germany) will come into the center of defense. Full back Anthony Ralston had a torrid evening against Jamal Musiala and co, so Clarke may bench him in favor of Bristol City defender Ross McCrorie. In midfield, Callum McGregor could make way for Brighton's Billy Gilmour, in a bid to give Scotland more control of possession and a foothold in the game.
Possible starting eleven: Gunn, Hanley, Hendry, Tierney, McCrorie, McGregor, McGinn, Gilmour, McTominay, Robertson, Adams.
The big question for Switzerland is whether talismanic striker Breel Embolo is fit to start, following his goalscoring cameo against Hungary. The good news for Swiss boss Murat Yakin is that Embolo's replacement, Kwadwo Duah, showed no sign of nerves on his first ever tournament appearance. He led the line purposefully, showed excellent movement and took his one-on-one chance with aplomb. If Yakin does decide to continue with Duah up front, it seems almost inevitable that he will name the starting eleven that played so positively in their opening game.
Possible starting eleven: Sommer; Schar, Akanji, Rodriguez; Widmer, Freuler, Xhaka, Ndoye; Shaqiri, Vargas; Duah
