The Detroit Tigers look to sustain their momentum as they kick off a new series with the skidding San Diego Padres starting on Monday at Comerica Park.
The Tigers took 3 out of 4 in the series with the Kansas City Royals to improve their record to 13-9, No.1 in the American League Central. They may have lost the series finale 3-4 in extra innings, but that won’t diminish a successful weekend for Detroit, who has just lowered their team ERA to 3.12.
The Padres won Game 3 vs. the Houston Astros, 3-2, on Sunday, but losing three of their last five games has brought down their record to 16-6, 0.5 games ahead of the LA Dodgers (16-5) in the National League West. San Diego is still lethal batting team, averaging .276 with 97 runs this season. They still own the second-best ERA in baseball at 2.74 despite their recent hiccups but they better bring their A-game against the Tigers, who also possess the depth to match their firepower on the mound.

I would pick the Tigers to stay cooking at Comerica Park. Not only are they 8-2 against the spread in their last 10 home games, but Detroit is putting in a better batting average in their last five games than San Diego did in their last five. The Tigers are averaging 4.2 runs, whereas the Padres are struggling with 2.8 runs per game in their 5-game stretch. Keider Montero had a horrific stint vs. the Brewers, allowing five earned runs in 5.0 innings. But I am still optimistic that he can regain his mojo against the struggling Padres’ batters in Game 1. Padres’ starter Randy Vasquez has been nice this season with a 1-1 record and 1.74 ERA, but there’s a good chance he will get an L again not because he’s bad but the Padres’ offense is on a slump right now that they just can’t get him enough runs to beat another playoff-caliber team.
