Romania takes on Ukraine in the first match of Group E at Euro 2024, with both teams facing the pressure of needing points in their first match. On one hand, Romania has lost just once in its past 12 matches, which covers 2023 and 2024. On the other, the Tricolorii have led a charmed life with their draw for the past year-plus.
Romania only had to play two of its 10 Euro qualifiers in a true road setting, as Belarus got banned from hosting because of the Russian war and Israel had to move all of its home games to neutral venues after its war with Hamas. As such, Romania coasted into Euros without ever really getting tested. The Romanians only won one true road match, and that came against minnows Andorra. The lack of battles showed against Colombia, as Romania fell behind early and couldn't come back.

Ukraine is the sentimental favorite to have a strong tournament, and it's shown its potential in draws with England and Germany in the lead-up. The Ukrainians feel like they're the second-best side in the group behind Belgium, and it's hard to argue given what they showed in qualifying. Their group was brutal with England and Italy involved, plus a lack of home games from the Russian invasion. Even though they came through the playoff paths, they should be considered a viable threat to advance in second place.
