The Monte Carlo Masters 1000 kicks off this week in Monaco, much to the delight of tennis fans. The first round features Spain's Roberto Bautista-Agut and American Brandon Nakashima, both vying for a place in the second round.

Roberto Bautista-Agut has just tried his luck at the Bucharest clay-court tournament. He won his first-round match by coming from behind to beat world No.67 Yunchaokete Bu, before losing to Francisco Comesana (world No.64). His first-round victory must nevertheless have done the Spaniard a world of good, as he was going through a tricky period in his season. Indeed, he began the year with a series of 4 consecutive defeats, only to lose 3 more in a row. 

Brandon Nakashima, meanwhile, has just notched up 2 fine victories at the Houston clay-court tournament. He stopped his two compatriots Mackenzie McDonald and Christopher Eubanks in 2 sets, before losing to a 3rd American: top 20 Frances Tiafoe. The American should therefore arrive confident at this tournament, especially as he seems to be enjoying the Masters 1000, having won his first 2 rounds at the BNP Paribas Open and in Miami last March.
