Madrid giants Real and Atletico go head to head this week in one of the most exciting looking Champions League knockout games of recent years. The two teams are among the favorites for this season's competition and despite Real's glittering array of world class players, this looks like an incredibly tight matchup.
Atletico are currently two points clear of their rivals at the top of the La Liga table and are playing arguably their best football of the season. During the league phase of the competition, they won their final five pictures to earn a fifth place finish and automatic qualification for the last 16.
In contrast, Real were not at the best during the league phase, but as they showed in the 6-3 destruction of Manchester City in the play off round, they are capable of beating anyone on their day. Remarkably, the last five games between Real and Atletico have ended all square after 90 minutes, including a thrilling 1-1 La Liga draw just three weeks ago.

Real's La Liga form has fallen away since the beginning of February and now have picked up just one win from their last five games. Last time out, they fell to a shock 2-1 loss at Real Betis, a result that dropped them down to third in the standings. However, their cup form has been excellent so far this year. Aside from the playoff victory over City, they also look in pole position to make the final of the Cope Del Rey, after defeating Real Sociedad 0-1 in the first leg of their semi final.
Defensive solidity the key for Atletico
Saturday's tense 1-0 victory over Bilbao means Atletico have now lost just one of their last 15 games in La Liga. As usual, the key to that success has been a rock solid defence, superbly marshaled by goalkeeper Jan Oblak. Diego Simeone's men have conceded just 16 goals in 26 league games this season, comfortably the best record in the division.
