Zheng Qinwen of China faces Elise Mertens of Belgium in an interesting third-round clash at the 2025 Charleston Open on Thursday.
Zheng opened her clay court season campaign strong with a 6-4, 6-1 win over former world’s No.3 Maria Sakkari of Greece. Buoyed by back-to-back quarterfinals stint at the Sunshine Double, the Chinse carried over her impeccable form onto the green clay of Charleston, where she held 100 percent of her serves and shattered Sakkari’s serves four times to seal the win.
Mertens also advanced to the round of 16 with a 6-3 7-5 win over Varvara Gracheva of France. The Belgian claimed her first clay-court win this year by winning 26 points off her first serves and 18 off the second. She also broke six times to stay undefeated against Gracheva in three head-to-head matches.
