Zheng Qinwen of China guns for her first semifinal appearance this year against Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia in the quarterfinal of the 2025 Charleston Open.
Zheng moved on to the quarterfinal round after hacking out a 6-3 3-6 6-3 victory over Elise Mertens of Belgium. The Chinese captured 39 points off her firsts serves and converting 5 of 9 breakpoints to stave off Mertens’ serious upset bid. Zheng now has a chance to book her first semis stint on the WTA Tour this year after falling short in the round of 8 at 2025 Indian Wells and Miami Open.
Alexandrova also earned her way into the quarterfinal with two quality wins over Ann Li 6-3 6-0 and Diana Shnaider 6-2 6-1. Against Shnaider, Alexandrova applied relentless pressure on her opponent, holding alle except one of her serves while capturing 18 first-serve points. The Russian also fired 8 aces and converted all five breakpoint chances in the match.
