In a rematch of the gold medal match at the Paris Olympics, Qinwen Zheng will take on Donna Vekic for a place in the quarterfinals of the 2024 US Open championship. Zheng, who won the gold in the women’s singles event at the 2024 Olympics, clobbered Jule Niemeier 6-2 6-1 to reach the round of 16. Before her third-round victory, Zheng had to overcome an upset bid from wild card Amanda Anisimova 4-6 6-4 6-2 and Erika Andreeva 6-7(3) 6-1 6-2 in the first rounds. Vekic, on the other hand, hasn’t lost a set in the tournament yet. She delivered straight-set victories over Kimberly Birrell 6-4, 6-4, Greetje Minnen 7-5 6-1, and Peyton Stearns 7-5 6-4 to move closer to equalizing her quarterfinal finish at the 2019 US Open.
