Pumas UNAM and the Vancouver Whitecaps go into the second leg of their CONCACAF Champions Cup quarter final all square after a tense 1-1 draw in last week's first leg. Vancouver took the lead in that game through an own goal by Pumas defender Nathan Silva, but they were pegged back by a late strike from Adalberto Carrasquilla. In truth, a draw was a fair result after an evenly matched game in which both sides struggled to create clear goalscoring chances.
Vancouver come into this second leg in high spirits after a comfortable weekend victory over the Colorado Rapids preserved their position at the top of the MLS Western Conference. Meanwhile, Pumas suffered a dismal 3-2 defeat at Cruz Azul in Liga MX, a result that saw them drop into the bottom half of the standings.

They needed a last gasp strike from Brian White to defeat Saprissa 3-2 in the last 3-2, before edging out Monterrey on away goals in the round of 16.

Pumas manager Efraín Juárez has an almost fully fit squad to choose from for Wednesday's game. That means he is likely to go with the same 4-2-3-1 formation used in last week's first leg, with Mexican international striker Guillermo Martinez once again leading the attack. This is Martinez's second season with Pumas as he looks to top last season's goal count of 15.
Blackmon to miss out for the Whitecaps
The Vancouver Whitecaps are heading into this quarter-final with an almost clean bill of health. Since the MLS is only just beginning, most of the players are ready and available for this matchup. Their only absentee will be defender Tristan Blackmon who remains out with a groin injury picked up last month. They are likely to stick with the 3-4-3 system that has proved highly effective so far this season as they sit at the top of the MLS Western standings for the time being.

As the first leg demonstrated, these are too evenly matched teams, so we would not be surprised to see this game go all the way to overtime. Vancouver are clearly in better form, but Pumas are a tough team to beat on their home turf, so we think they will push Vancouver all the way. MLS teams have a long history now of experiencing difficulties against Liga MX teams, especially on the road. While the level of play has objectively risen over the last few years in the league, time will tell if MLS teams can consistently match their Mexican counterparts.
Both teams played over the weekend, albeit to quite different results. Overall, we'd probably just about favor the visitors, but the odds of 4.25 on the game finishing in a score draw after 90 minutes are too long to ignore.
