The last 16 of the Champions League begins on Tuesday night, and one of the most intriguing clashes of the round sees Dutch side PSV take on Premier League Arsenal. Both sides currently occupy second place in their respective domestic leagues, but have encountered dips in form at the worst possible time. Arsenal have failed to score in their last two league games and are now 13 points behind leaders Liverpool with just 11 games remaining.
A combination of injuries to key players and the lack of an established center forward have derailed the Gunners' title hopes, and the Champions League is now their only realistic chance of silverware this season. PSV's title hopes also appear to be in ruins following a run of four games without a victory in the Eredivisie. However, they produced a fantastic display in the Champions League play off round to see off Juventus 4-3 on aggregate.

Two weeks ago, Arsenal looked primed to make a late season Premier League title charge. However, a 0-1 defeat at home to West Ham followed by a 0-0 draw with Notts Forest have effectively ended their chances of overhauling Liverpool at the top of the table. In contrast, their progress to the last 16 of the Champions League has been largely untroubled, and their run of four consecutive wins to finish the group stage helped them secure third place in the league phase.
PSV struggling for victories
Saturday's 3-2 defeat to the Go Ahead Eagles means that PSV have now picked up just three points in their last four Eredivisie games. Defensive frailties have been the main issue for Peter Bosz's man, and they have kept just one clean sheet in their last 11 domestic fixtures. Those defensive issues have also been evident in the Champions League, but after finishing 14th during the league phase, they produced a sensational second leg play off display to defeat Italian giants Juventus and book their place in the last 16.

Arsenal have been riddled with injury issues all season and are currently without several key players. Attackers Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Jesus Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka will all miss the trip to the Netherlands, leaving boss Mikel Arteta with a serious selection headache. Midfielder Mikel Merino was asked to play in a forward role in the 0-0 draw against Forest, but the Spaniard looked uncomfortable at times and Arteta may decide to go in a different direction this week.

In contrast to Arsenal, PSV have an almost fully fit squad for Tuesday's game. Long term absentees Ricardo Pepi and Malik Tillman are still out, but there are no fresh concerns for Bosz and he is likely to stick with the starting eleven that overcame Juventus in the play off round.
