PSG vs Marseille Prediction & Picks - Ligue 1
by Tyler Doty | in Soccer Picks
This is always one of the most highly anticipated matchups of the Ligue 1 season. The "Classique" between Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique de Marseille will take place on Matchday 26 of the French championship. This clash will be played at the Parc des Princes this Sunday at 3:45 PM EST. And PSG couldn’t ask for a better setup for this showdown. In addition to being comfortably at the top of Ligue 1, the capital club has just secured a spot in the quarterfinals of the Champions League. Last Tuesday, Luis Enrique’s squad defeated Liverpool at Anfield after a penalty shootout. The Parisians are looking to keep their perfect week going, and our prediction aligns with that expectation.
Marseille is undoubtedly dreaming of pulling off an upset against its fierce rival. The club has been sitting in second place in the French league for quite some time now. Their main goal is to secure a top-three finish and qualify directly for next season’s Champions League without having to go through the qualifiers. However, Roberto De Zerbi’s men have a tough challenge ahead against PSG, especially after suffering a tough loss last weekend against RC Lens (0-1). Marseille will need to pull off a major upset to stand up to the Ligue 1 leaders.

PSG - Marseille: Form Analysis
What can we say about PSG’s recent performances? For weeks now, the capital club has been unstoppable. Domestically, they have no real competition. After winning the Trophée des Champions, they remain in contention in the Coupe de France semifinals. The Parisian squad will face USL Dunkerque on April 1st for a place in the final. And under Luis Enrique, the team has been just as dominant in Ligue 1. Still unbeaten after 25 matches, they lead the table by 16 points over their next opponent.
PSG is riding a six-game winning streak in Ligue 1 and hasn’t slowed down in the Champions League either. Despite losing the first leg of the Round of 16 against Liverpool (0-1), they refused to give up before traveling to Anfield. In a highly intense second leg, Paris managed to erase their deficit with a goal from Ousmane Dembélé (0-1). It all came down to penalties, where the Parisians held their nerve and secured their place in the quarterfinals, where they will face Aston Villa. This will only boost their confidence ahead of the Classique.
PSG has just knocked out Liverpool in the Champions League Round of 16.
On the other hand, Marseille is not competing in any European tournaments this season. They were eliminated in the Coupe de France Round of 32 after a penalty shootout loss to Lille. With only one clear objective in sight—qualifying for the Champions League next season—De Zerbi’s squad remains in a strong position. They’ve held second place in Ligue 1 for quite a while, but nothing is guaranteed yet. Heading into this matchday, they are only five points ahead of AS Monaco (4th) and Lille (5th).
However, the Olympians have been struggling lately, losing twice in their last three matches. After a crushing 3-0 defeat against AJ Auxerre, they bounced back with a 2-0 win over FC Nantes. But last weekend, their struggles resurfaced. Despite dominating against RC Lens, they failed to find the net and conceded a last-minute goal (0-1). This is far from the ideal preparation for a trip to Paris.

PSG & Marseille Squad Analysis
For this Classique, PSG has only one uncertainty. Marquinhos picked up an injury against Liverpool and remains doubtful for this clash. One thing is certain: Luis Enrique will take no risks with him. Other than that, the coach should have a full squad available. Gianluigi Donnarumma, for instance, is coming into this game with plenty of confidence after his stellar performance in Liverpool.
And he’s not the only one! Willian Pacho has proven to be one of the best signings of the last winter transfer window. In midfield, Joao Neves and Vitinha have been shining for months now. PSG’s attacking line is also stacked. Recently called up by Didier Deschamps, Désiré Doué has taken his game to the next level. And what can we say about Ousmane Dembélé? After scoring again against Liverpool on Wednesday, he now has 29 goals and 6 assists across all competitions.
Ousmane Dembélé is arriving in top form for this Classique.
For Marseille, there was some bad news this week. Pierre-Emile Højbjerg suffered an injury and will miss this match. He joins Amir Murillo, Amine Harit, and Faris Mombagna on the injury list. Meanwhile, Gerónimo Rulli, who has been outstanding this season, will have to be at his very best. The Argentine goalkeeper will need to deliver a heroic performance to help his team pull off an upset.
Roberto De Zerbi is also hoping for a strong outing from Leonardo Balerdi, as the Argentine center-back will have his hands full against PSG’s attackers. Ismaël Bennacer and Adrien Rabiot—who is making his return to the Parc des Princes—are used to big games and will need to lead by example. Struggling recently, Luis Henrique and Mason Greenwood will look to step up at the perfect time. Meanwhile, Amine Gouiri, who has scored three goals in his last four games, will aim to shine.

Our PSG vs Marseille Prediction
This Ligue 1 Classique is highly anticipated! However, it’s hard to see Marseille pulling off an upset at the Parc des Princes. PSG has been operating on another level in recent weeks, both domestically and in Europe. Luis Enrique’s men know how important this match is for their fans, and they will be eager to put on a show before the international break. In what should be a high-scoring affair, we expect PSG to come away with another win and take another step toward the title.
