The surprising upstart Pirates wrap up their 7-game road trip to start the season with Martin Perez to face-off with the Nationals’ Josiah Gray on Thursday afternoon. No one saw a 5-0 start (as of this article) for these Pirates. Not were they projected to be near the very bottom of the league, but the fact that they were starting the season on this long road trip should have made things even tougher for them. Granted, their opponents have a combined 1-9 record to start the season, it is still noteworthy. Martin Perez is coming off a 4.1 inning outing in his last start and allowed just 6 hits and 1 earned run while striking out just 2 batters. Not known as a strikeout pitcher, the 3 walks he allowed is a bit worrisome. For the Nationals, it has been a rough 1-3 start to their season. They will throw Josiah Gray who got lit up in his 1st outing this season against the Reds. He allowed 7 earned runs on 8 hits through just 4 innings of work. Gray, who finished last season with a 3.91 ERA, was well below the 4.26 MLB average.
