Peru vs Chile Prediction & Picks - Copa America
by Simon Day | in Copa America Picks
Chile and Peru kick off their Copa America campaigns with an intriguing looking Group A clash at AT&T Stadium on Friday. With world champions Argentina also lurking in the group, along with minnows Canada, this looks like being a key game in determining who makes the knockout stages. The bookmakers have Chile has strong favourites for the three points, but although they have the more recognizable names in their squad, their recent form has been patchy. Peru are unbeaten in 2024 and will come into the game confident of causing a surprise.

Peru - Chile: Form Analysis
Peru have a very solid record in recent editions of the Copa America. They have reached the quarter finals at each of the last ten tournaments, including a stunning run to the final in 2019. Last time out, they made it to the semi finals before succumbing 1-0 to Brazil. Since then, Peru have had an awful run of form in World Cup 202 qualification, picking up just two points from their first six games. They are rooted to the bottom of the qualification table with little hope of making it to the tournament. However, they have performed much better in recent friendly games and are unbeaten in four games this year.
Chile have had a mixed bag of results over the last year, with four wins, four defeats and three draws coming in their last 11 games. They have also struggled in World Cup qualification, winning just one of their opening six matches. At the last Copa America, they scrapped through the group stages, before losing 1-0 to Brazil in the quarter finals. They have won the tournament on two previous occasions, most recently in 2016, when they defeated Argentina on penalties in the final.

Peru & Chile Squad Analysis
Peru manager Jorge Fossati has a highly experienced squad going into the tournament. Both Christian Cueva and Andre Carillo will pick up their 100th caps during the group stages, whilst goalkeeper Pedro Gallese passed the landmark last year. However, that all pales in comparison to striker Paulo Guerrero, who has racked up 119 appearances and 39 goals with the national team. Fossati may opt to use Guerrero from the bench against Chile, with Edison Flores likely to get the starting place up front.
Possible starting eleven: Gallese; Callens, Zambrano, Abram; Advincula, Pena, Cartagena, Castillo, Lopez; Lapadula, Flores
Chile also have a hugely experienced squad for the tournament. Talismanic forward Alexis Sanchez has an incredible international record of 163 caps and 51 goals. Meanwhile, Goalkeeper Claudio Bravo will reach the 150 cap mark at the competition and striker Eduardo Vargas will make his 110th appearance if selected for this game. All three of those players are likely to be key for Chile in the tournament.
Possible starting eleven: Bravo; Isla, Maripan, Diaz, Suazo; Nunez, Pulgar; Davila, Sanchez, Valdes; Vargas
