The Angels captured only their 13th win at Angels Park behind a dominant pitching performance from Griffin Canning, who smothered the A’s to just one run with five strikeouts in 7.0 innings. Taylor Ward’s two-run homer in the first inning also dictated the tone for the Angels for the rest of the game. The Angels improved their overall record to 31-46, four games clear of the Athletics, who dropped to 29-52.
Players to Watch: Taylor Ward, who is batting .241 with 13 homers and 40 RBIs, is on a four-game hitting streak. Athletics left fielder Brent Booker now has 15 hits this June.
The LA Angels will be sending lefty Tyler Anderson (6-7, 2.48 ERA with 63 strikeouts) to the mound for Tuesday’s game 2, and he will face Athletics Mitch Spence (4-3, 3.86 ERA with 50 strikeouts).
