Portugal’s No.1 Nuno Borges will battle Spanish rival Pedro Martinez Portero in the second round of the 2025 Monte Carlo Masters on Wednesday.
Borges advanced to the second round of competition after hacking out an upset over Denmark’s Holger Rune in the first round. The Portugues was leading 6-2 3-0 when Rune halted play due to illness. Rune was apparently experiencing symptoms even before the tournament began but still proceeded to play his first match. For Borges, the win improved his ATP season record to 15-11 and clay court record to 3-2 in 2025.
Portero is also fresh off an upset, downing 2025 Australian Open quarterfinalist Lorenzo Sonego 6-4 1-6 6-2 in the first round. The result handed Portero only his second win in nine matches. Portero holds a 4-4 record in clay-court surface with the highlight of this year’s campaign taking place on the red dirt of Buenos Aires, where he reached the semis of the 2025 Argentina Open.
