Netherlands vs France Prediction & Picks - Euro

France and the Netherlands meet in a rematch of qualifiers, as both teams were drawn into the same qualifying group thanks to UEFA's reliance on Nations League. Those matches proved disastrous for the Dutch, as the Oranje lost 2-1 on home soil and fell 4-0 to France on the road. Neither side looked like a potential champion in their group opener, as France wobbled past Austria in a match they could easily have lost had the Austrians finished their chances. Meanwhile, the Dutch needed a late goal from substitute Wout Weghorst to claim all three points against Poland.
But things look a little rosier in the Dutch camp because French star Kylian Mbappé suffered a broken nose against Austria and is a question mark for this match. Given that France doesn't need this match to progress and the runner-up gets the runner-up of Group E — now looking likely to be Slovakia or Romania — there's plenty of reason for the French to let Mbappé sit this one out and get fit for Poland.

The one exception, of course, was the 4-0 nightmare loss to France. But outside of that, the Dutch haven't failed to score since their surprising round of 16 exit to Czechia in Euro 2020.
France have avoided defeat in 13 of their past 15 matches overall and 12 straight competitive matches. They haven't lost to anyone but Germany since the final game of their group at the 2022 World Cup, and even that gets an asterisk because the French didn't need that match with Tunisia to advance.

Mbappé being out would represent a huge loss for France, given that he scored four of the six French goals against the Dutch over their past two meetings. Mbappe has famously never scored at a European championship, but his presence forces teams to pay attention to him and opens space up for the rest of the French attack.
Weghorst might be the most polarizing player in the Dutch camp. Ronald Koeman clearly believes other options give the Dutch the better chance to win, but Weghorst has now found the back of the net in five of the Oranje's past six victories. He's also playing in Germany, where he's scored 66 of his career goals. This past season, Burnley loaned him out to TSG Hoffenheim after he failed to crack their lineup, and he promptly went right back to scoring on German soil, netting seven in 28 appearances.

There doesn't appear to be much to separate these teams, especially with Mbappé a question mark. Mbappe is the biggest key to Les Bleus' attack, and with him either on the shelf or in a reduced capacity, France's edge over the Dutch is now gone.
The Oranje gave the sharper performance on the first day anyway, and this isn't a situation where either side has to worry too much about the consequences of defeat. France still has its easiest match to play when it meets Poland and the Netherlands should have more quality than Austria.
