Naomi Osaka looks to extend her most prolific run this season on Monday when she takes on Jasmine Paolini of Italy in the round of 16 of the 2025 Miami Open.
Osaka, runner-up to Iga Swiatek at the same tournament three years ago, is through the fourth round after outlasting fiery American Hailey Baptiste 7-6(6) 3-6 6-4 in the round of 32. Hot off a straight set win over Indian Wells quarterfinalist Liudmila Samsonova, Osaka persevered to take the first set via tiebreaker and put on the finishing touches in the third set to put away the American for good. The win gave Osaka a chance to play for a quarterfinal at a WTA 1000 event. The last time Osaka made the quarterfinal of a WTA 1000 event happened a year ago at the Qatar Open.
Paolini got an easy entry into the fourth round after her opponent Ons Jabeur begged off from continuing the match due to a left leg injury. Paolini was leading 4-3 in an intense back-and-forth match when Jabeur began hobbling towards the net to shake hands with her Italian foe and then umpire, confirming her decision to retire from the match. The win sent Paolini to the fourth round of the Miami Open for the second time in her career.

I give Jasmine Paolini a little edge against Naomi Osaka just because she’s coming into their showdown with fresher legs. Whether she denies it or not, Paolini has benefitted from Ons Jabeur’s retirement, giving her enough time to recover and scheme the following game plan. Osaka, meanwhile, may have already recovered physically after a one-day rest, but Baptiste exposed several loopholes in her game that Paolini could capitalize. Osaka’s stamina and durability are still suspect. Since returning from a maternity leave last year, Osaka has had campaigns where she looked like her old dominant self agai,n only to be derailed by injuries or fitness issues in the later rounds.
