Osaka took advantage of a weaker bracket to advance to her third quarterfinal appearance in 2024. Powered by 23 points on her first serves, the four-time Grand Slam winner overwhelmed Katie Volynets 6-3 6-2 in their round 3 matchup. Osaka will have a chance to reach her third quarterfinal this 2024 with a win over Gauff, who is recovering from a disappointing North American hard-court campaign that saw her US Open defense ended in a fourth-round exit. So far, so good for Gauff after two matches as she eliminated Clara Burel 7-5 6-3 and Katie Boulter 7-5 6-2 in straight sets. In her third-round match with Boulter, the American won 82 percent of her first serves and broke her opponent four times to seal the deal.

Had this match happened in 2020, I would wholeheartedly pick Osaka to win emphatically. However, the pecking order in women’s tennis has drastically changed since she took a maternity leave in 2023. Despite efforts to recapture her old, dominant self, Osaka stumbled in every major tournament she competed this season as she looks like a shell of her former self. Gauff is also going through some challenges with her form, failing to reach the deeper rounds since playing in the semis of the 2024 Roland Garros and Berlin Ladies Open in June. With their head-to-head series knotted at 2-2, it’s really hard to decide who will be the winner of this matchup. What I do know is Osaka is playing the best stretch of tennis for this year, converting 12 of 17 breakout opportunities and holding 83 percent of her serves in three matches at the China Open. These numbers might indicate that the former world’s No.1 is steadily regaining her old form, which could mean trouble for Gauff.
