In their first competitive match since a shock upset in the Europa League final, Leverkusen travels to Monchengladbach for their curtain-raiser. Leverkusen were handily defeated by Atalanta to ruin their perfect season and break their unbeaten record. Nicknamed “Neverlusen” last year in a twist of their infamous moniker poking fun at never winning the title, Xabi Alonso & Co. seemed incapable of succumbing to defeat. Many last-minute goals helped Leverkusen finish their domestic season unbeaten, a feat they will feel they can still achieve in 2024-25. Indeed, most of their players are returning, including the wunderkind manager Xabi who is staying on for at least one more year. But we must not forget the hosts, who have dwelled in mediocrity for many winters now in the Bundesliga. Current manager Gerry Seoane will be a familiar sight for many traveling Leverkusen supporters, who will no doubt recall his rocky campaign with the club. Seoane saw Leverkusen rise to 3rd on the table in 2021-22, their best finish in 7 years. But one win in the first 8 games of the next season meant his spell with the Westphalian side had come to an end.
