The Miami Marlins (6-19 SU, 8-17 ATS) look to avoid the sweep as they conclude their series with the Atlanta Braves (16-6 SU, 12-10 ATS). There are several reasons why the Marlins own the worst record in the National League, and it’s because they can’t hit worth much and their pitching is sorely lacking. Miami ranks second-worst in getting on base and dead last in working out walks.
Of course, against Atlanta, there aren’t many walks to work out anyway. The Braves rank fourth in the league at avoiding free passes, and they send Reynaldo Lopez to the mound after three strong outings to start his season. Lopez has only given up one run this season and has made it six innings in every appearance. He’s only allowed 17 batters to reach base this year, which doesn’t bode well for Miami.

The Atlanta offense seems to be firing on all cylinders right now. The Braves haven’t just won eight of their past nine, they’ve covered the run line in seven of those eight victories. With Lopez on the mound, Atlanta isn’t likely to miss a beat, and the Braves have the huge edge of the Marlins exposing their weak bullpen intentionally with Sixto Sanchez pitching.
Miami seems to be using Sanchez as an opener while bringing him back from a three-year absence because of shoulder issues. While that might be best for Sanchez to rehab his shoulder, the Marlins’ bullpen isn’t anywhere near strong enough to get away with that. If Miami was trying to win this year, that would be a problem, but the Marlins are more concerned with trying to win in 2025 and beyond. For the time being, they shouldn’t give Atlanta many issues.
