The Miami Marlins (5-17 SU, 7-15 ATS) look to spring a surprise against the Atlanta Braves (14-5 SU, 10-9 ATS) as the teams open their series. Miami’s Ryan Weathers has been one of the few bright spots for the Fish in 2024, as he’s coming off a 10-strikeout performance against San Francisco and has won two straight starts after taking an 0-7 mark down the stretch last year.
The Braves had a six-game winning streak snapped by the Rangers last time out, but they’ve looked the part of a World Series contender. Atlanta gets to see Bryce Elder take the hill for the first time this season, as he hasn’t pitched since October of last year. Down the stretch, he did face the Marlins once, taking a no-decision in a 9-6 defeat.

Weathers is off to a good start, but he hasn’t seen a lineup like Atlanta’s because there isn’t a lineup like Atlanta’s. The Braves hit for average and for power, ranking fifth in home runs, second in runs scored and first in OPS.
Miami barely hits. The Marlins do cash in when they actually get runners on base, scoring 85 runs despite ranking third-worst in OPS across the majors. But they don’t get enough of them on. Only the Twins and White Sox have a lower OPS than Miami’s .610, and neither of them have done much of anything at the plate this season. Against Atlanta’s lineup, it’s difficult to see Miami generating enough offense to stay in the game, even if Weathers turns in another sharp showing. Our prediction for this game is Braves -1.5.
