After six years of wait, Kei Nishikori’s and Marin Cilic’s paths cross again, this time the latest chapter of their rivalry will take place in the first round of the 2024 Japan Open on Thursday in Tokyo, Japan. Nishikori, who is coming off a first-round loss at the hands of eventual Chengdu Open champion Juncheng Shang, hopes he can draw out support from the home crowd as he takes on a familiar foe in Cilic. The Japanese faced an uphill battle upon his return from a hip injury, settling with underwhelming results from tournaments he used to play well in the past. Cilic had shared the same career trajectory as Nishikori until he caught everybody by surprise when he defeated hometown favorite Zhang Zhizhen 7-6(5) 7-6(5) to bag the Hangzhou Open championship two days ago. It marked Cilic’s first ATP title since ruling the St. Petersburgh Open tournament in 2021.

I'm going with Cilic in this one because he has some momentum heading into their 16th match against Nishikori. Furthermore, the Croatian appears to have recaptured the effectiveness of his powerful serves, blasting double-digit aces in nearly every match in Hangzhou, including 18 against Zhang, and dominating the first serve battle with a higher conversion rate. Nishikori will do his best to make it a challenging game, but I can't see him beating a confident Cilic.
