Casper Ruud of Norway faces off against Marcos Giron of the United States in the first round of the 2025 Dallas Open. Ruud continued to struggle at the Australian Open as he was shown the door as early as the second round. The Norwegian, whose best finish in Melbourne was a round-of-16 stint in 2021, pulled off a 6-3 1-6 7-5 2-6 6-1 escape against Jaume Antoni Munar Clar of Spain. Ruud’s campaign ended after bowing to Jakub Mensik of the Czech Republic in four sets 6-2 3-6 6-1 6-4. Despite bombing out early in Australia, Ruud still climbed to world’s No.5 thanks to ATP’s weird ranking system. Giron had a solid three-week campaign in Australia. The American reached the quarterfinal of the Adelaide International, losing to the eventual champion, Felix Auger-Aliassime 7-6(3) 6-3. He also made it through to the round-of-32 at the Australian Open, where he got eliminated by the reigning champion, Jannik Sinner, 6-3 6-4 6-2 .

The Norwegian has improved his 2025 ATP season record to 5-1 after beating Mariano Navone 6-3 6-3 and Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-3 6-3 in Norway’s Davis Cup qualification tie with Norway over the weekend. Giron is a complete wildcard. No one knows what to expect from the American, who has four career wins against top-10 players. Ruud has beaten Giron twice out of three meetings, all of which were played on the hard court. This is a tricky match for everybody, including the bettors.
