With Real Sociedad far from a European competition spot in La Liga, and Manchester United with no chance of a domestic trophy this season, Thursday's Europa League second leg at Old Trafford is a crucial match for both sides.
Manchester United and Real Sociedad drew 1-1 in Spain in the first leg, but the Red Devils' dominance, at least in Europa League home games, and Real Sociedad's recent poor run away from home, having lost five of their last six away matches, has led bookmakers to give the Premier League side an implied probability of winning on Thursday of over 50%.
Of course, everything looks uncertain for Manchester United this season. The atmosphere around the legendary club is not only one of discontent among fans, but also compounded by Jim Ratcliffe's statements about major financial errors and what he believes were poor decisions, such as keeping Ten Hag as manager for too long, that led to one of Manchester United's lowest points tallies.
Despite everything, Manchester United's record is solid in the Europa League, but it shouldn't be relied upon, given that Real Sociedad were responsible for their only Europa League defeat at Old Trafford in 28 matches.

Manchester United is coming off a weekend hosting Arsenal on a day that began with protests from the club's most die-hard fans. Regarding the match, Manchester United surprisingly outplayed Arsenal for a large portion of the match, even without possession. Manchester United then had a clear chance at the end, but they couldn't convert it thanks to a save by goalkeeper Raya. It seems that Manchester United, on top of everything else, isn't having much luck this season.
At least they can find solace in the fact that Real Sociedad has proved to be the disappointment of La Liga, sitting 11th, 7 points behind Real Betis, who hold the last European spot. After Alguacil's team faced a difficult schedule at the beginning of the month, pitting them against Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Manchester United, they couldn't even draw at home against Sevilla this weekend in a match where they only registered two shots on target.
