The Louisville Cardinals will try to remain undefeated when they travel to Indiana this weekend to take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Notre Dame Stadium in Notre Dame, IN. Kickoff for this matchup of top 25 teams is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET on Peacock.
There isn’t a lot of history between these two teams. This game will be just the fifth between the two programs; each has won twice, once on the road and once at home. Louisville won the most recent matchup last season, 33-20. Both teams were ranked heading into that game: the Cardinals were No. 25, and Notre Dame was the No. 10 team in the country. The win propelled Louisville up to No. 14 in the rankings.
With one loss already underneath their belt, the Fighting Irish can’t afford to lose another game, that is, if they are going to stay relevant in the College Football Playoff picture. A second loss could be overcome with a big win in a conference title game, which Notre Dame cannot do as an independent. With one loss, Louisville will likely need to win the ACC title game to have a shot at the CFP. But with at least two challenging games on deck (against Miami and Clemson), they are far from a lock even to make the title game.

The key to victory for the Cardinals will be stopping the run and forcing Notre Dame to pass to get back in the game. Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard is a serious threat in the run game, but if forced to pass, the Fighting Irish offense is in trouble. Leonard’s season high is just 163 yards passing, which he got in the loss to Northern Illinois. Louisville has held opponents to under 100 yards rushing a game this season, but they have yet to face a run game quite like Notre Dame’s. They’ll slow Leonard and company down but will not stop them. However, the offense will get enough explosive plays to keep the Cardinals in the game till the end.
