The San Francisco Giants (34-35 SU, 33-36 ATS) continue their foray through the AL West as they welcome in the Los Angeles Angels (26-42 SU, 38-30 ATS). The pitching has been a major problem for Los Angeles, as the Angels have the second-worst ERA in the American League. The starters haven’t been bad for the Angels, but the bullpen has been an adventure to say the least.
Along with Colorado, the Angels are one of just two MLB teams with a bullpen ERA over 5. And that’s why it’s usually a good idea to get in and get out as quickly as possible with the Angels. Starter Tyler Anderson has held four of his past five opponents to one earned run, which makes the first five innings a viable play. However, that comes with a catch: the Angels have given him no more than two runs of support in four straight starts.

San Francisco counters with Spencer Howard, who might be on his way to finding a full-time pitching home. Howard has bounced between Philadelphia, New York and Texas with little success, but he’s turned in three strong showings with the Giants. He hasn’t shown enough endurance to get outs beyond the fifth inning, but he has given up just three runs in 13.1 innings of work.
The biggest difference between the teams is the pitching situation. While Anderson has pitched well to date, he isn’t backed up by much when he leaves the game. The Giants’ bullpen isn’t a strength, but nor is it a liability. San Francisco can get outs and get out of tight spots, which should help Howard if he gets in trouble. The longer the game goes, the more it favors the Giants, so our prediction for Los Angeles vs. San Francisco is for the Giants to win.
